MASTER CLASS

Leading Learning Using Assessment: Instructional Leadership In Action

Transforming education is not about the “latest idea.” It is about imagining the best possible future for our students, so that we can take the next steps that make the most sense and have the greatest impact. As a result, today’s leaders are challenged to go beyond past practices. We are called to build on research and to find practical ways to support vibrant learning communities, amidst the complexity of today’s schools and the broader societal context. Current work in the area of assessment for learning can help to make the difference that we all seek. Research has shown that when assessment is used not only in the service of student learning but also teacher, school, and system learning, alignment is realized and student achievement increases. During this full-day session, we will explore how to boost your instructional leadership through the use of assessment principles. Areas of focus will include:

  • Considering indicators of assessment in the service of student, adult, school, and system learning.

  • Supporting educators to put quality assessment strategies into practice.

  • Intentionally modeling assessment actions within our own leadership practice.

This presentation by Sandra Herbst will be an opportunity for you to reflect on your own leadership and plan for immediate next steps. Examples, video clips, and accounts from leaders across many jurisdictions will be used to both provoke and extend our learning.
